Commonly Confused Pronouns

This will show up on every test and is something pretty much everyone needs to review.

Here’s how the answer choices will often look:

A. it’s

B. its

C. they’re

D. their

Start by figuring out if you want a singular or plural pronoun. Once you’ve figured that out, cross out the wrong answer choices.

Many students see the apostrophe in “it’s” and think possessive. However, think “it is.” Read the sentence back with “it is” substituted in. Now pick the right answer.

Make flashcards of the following:

Word Think
it’s it is
its possessive
its’ always wrong
its’s always wrong
they’re they are
their possessive
there over there

Tip: if you have the answer choices down to “it’s” and “its” then the answer is most likely going to be “its”
